Lauro is honored to be Willamette Week’s Restaurant of the Year. We are proud to be recognized for our welcoming neighborhood environment and our commitment to the simple yet exceptional flavors of Italy, Greece, Spain, Turkey and Portugal. Roasted beets, pears, braised lamb, local greens, apples, hazelnuts, pumpkin and beef short ribs ... are highlights of the new fall menu and nightly specials available at Lauro. Duck Leg Confit with Frisee and Vincotto, Roasted Beet Salad with Pears, Hazelnuts and Feta Cheese, Short Ribs of Beef with Saffron Runner Beans and Braised Greens, Pear, Fontina and Smoked Prosciutto Pizza are just some of the new menu items that bring the best of local fall flavors to your table.

Notes from the Bar: Choose Spicy or Warm
Local bar legend Bruce Skinner now holds court behind the bar Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Gloria Preston has joined us from Tabla and runs the bar on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Bruce and Gloria say Vive La France! with our unique French Bloody Mary. We call her Bloody Marie: Hot Pepper vodka, puree of San Marzano tomatoes, dash of Pernod and house spices. A tasty after-dinner drink is Café Capriccio: Tia Maria, Amaretto, Brandy with Stumptown Coffee and cream.

Recognition and New Reds
Lauro was a recent winner at the prestigious Monterey Wine Festival competition. We were honored in the category America’s Best Casual Dining Wine List – fewer than 100 selections. Other winners at the Festival included Greens (San Francisco), Sardine Factory (Monterey), Herbfarm (Seattle) and Spiaggia (Chicago).

Robust reds are the perfect accompaniment to our hearty fall recipes. New additions include:

Campo de Boria, Borsao Reserva Spain ’98 described as powerful in the nose with a perfect combination of spicy and balsamic tones rich in noble tannins, fleshy and flavourful, with breadth and elegance in its aftertaste. $25

Cabernet – Syrah, Mas de Guiot, France ’02 a blend of Cabernet and Syrah, is smooth and ripe in the mouth with dark berry, meat and smoke flavors – there are no hard edges in this wine. $26

She’s Back!
Portland restaurant maven, Heather, is back at Lauro. Many of our customers know Heather and have enjoyed her service and insight at some of Portland’s best restaurants, including L’Auberge, Delphina’s and Mingo. Heather was at Lauro the day we opened, inviting friends across the City to visit us. Heather - we’re glad you’re back.

Desserts
Thanks to Lee Posey who worked with us in our first year to launch our dessert menu. Lee is back at the Pearl Bakery and Jackie Perry-Sappington and Nancy Forrest have joined Lauro as a Pastry Chefs. Both women, Southeast Portland neighbors, have impressive resumes. Nancy, classically trained in France, has honed her skills at Wildwood and In Good Taste Cooking School. Jackie, also a Wildwood veteran, worked at Paley’s Place as pastry chef Café Azul. Jackie and Nancy create authentic and delicious desserts that are the perfect finish to your meal. Fall additions to the dessert menu include Spiced Pear Cake with Poached Pear and Cider Zabaglione and Apple Crostada with Cinnamon Gelato and Carmel Sauce.

Climbing the Walls
Lauro recently commissioned two metal sculptures by Southeast Portland Artist, Eric Holt. The towering steel bay leaf branches and wine racks were installed on the south side of the dining room. Check them out on your next visit.
