Menu Favorites: Back by Popular Demand
Paying homage to his Portuguese roots, David Machado brings some of his favorites to the winter menu. Mediterranean Mussels and Chouriço in Cataplana is a traditional dish of mussels, Portuguese sausage, peppers, onions, garlic, tomatoes and white wine, cooked first on the stovetop then in the oven in the beautiful hammered copper vessel – the Cataplana.

Our classic Portuguese entree Pork and Clams “Alentejo” with Sweet Peppers, Potatoes and Cilantro is back on the menu as is our much-loved House Made Pumpkin and Ricotta Ravioli with Sage Butter from our days at Pazzo. Handcrafted daily in the restaurant, these rich and savory ravioli are finished with amaretto cookie crumbs for a hint of sweetness.

Featured Vegetarian Entree
Fabulous flavors and a touch of the exotic come together in our Roasted Winter Vegetables with Couscous and Harissa Sauce. Hearty butternut squash, turnips, cauliflower, romanesco broccoli cooked with vegetable stock, garlic, dried chilies, cumin and caraway are a sublime combination served with a Tunisian hot pepper sauce. The sweetness of the roasted vegetables and the spicy accent of the Harissa sauce make this a unique and satisfying entree with wide appeal. Lauro’s seasonal menu always includes numerous vegetarian dishes. More than one-third of our menu is vegetarian.

Notes from the Bar: Temperature’s Rising
Two tasty beverages have been added to our drink menu, both geared to warm you up on a cold or rainy Portland eve. The Steamed Brandy Alexander combines Fundador Brandy, Tia Maria, steamed milk and nutmeg. If it’s cold and rainy our Hot Brick Toddy may prove therapeutic: Jim Beam Bourbon, honey and butter finished with hot water. Belly up to the Lauro Bar, tell Bruce Skinner or Gloria Preston what ails you and choose something steamed or hot.

Wines on Reserve
In response to requests from our loyal customers, four exceptional reds are now available on reserve. Hand-selected by Daren Hamilton we are pleased to offer additional wines that add depth to our wine list. Let us know what you think.

At the Head Table
Lauro Chef/Owner David Machado was proud to be a Guest Chef for the pilot of The Head Table. Southeast neighbor Deborah Kane, former Executive Director of Food Alliance, developed the TV pilot where she brings her friends and colleagues together for dinner. Over great food and conversation the guests explore the politics of culture and food. Aired locally on Fox 12 in November 2004, response has been excellent. Hopefully, the dinner and discussion will continue for the Northwest audience and across the country. Congratulations Deborah and Dave.

Lauro Kitchen is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5pm to 10 pm. Complimentary parking is available in our private lot on the west side of the building. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. Please try to arrive early to insure a table for you and your party.

Salud,

David Machado
