Notes from the Bar: Some Like it Hot!
Bar Goddess, Gloria Preston, presents exciting original cocktails for the fall season. Shown here during a recent shake down, Gloria designs drinks perfect for the season and the menu - options are warm, spicy and hot.
Based on a drink served at the Dragon Eye Hotel in Hong Kong, Dragon Fire mixes Absolut Mandrin, Cointreau, fresh lime and cranberry juice. A festive, pretty pink, this aperitif is a bit sweet, tart and smooth throughout.
Spicy Ginger is Gloria's invention featuring Monopolowa Vodka infused with Turkish heirloom cayenne peppers and fresh ginger root. Ginger puree, fresh lemon and a slice of candied ginger create a soft cloud of pure heat.
A new twist on a classic, our Bulleit Old Fashioned boasts high-quality Bulleit Bourbon, muddled orange, bitters and a tasty Amarena cherry. This is a warming drink that could be considered comfort food.
Vindalho - Open for Dinner
Our new restaurant Vindalho - Spice Route Cuisine located twelve blocks southwest of Lauro Kitchen, at SE 21st & Clinton, is now open. We are proud of the warm welcome and great feedback we have received. Vindalho's menu and environment are innovative, modern, edgy and definitely spicy. Please visit us, experience our heirloom Indian recipes made with local and seasonal produce, and decide for yourself. Vindalho is open Tuesday through Saturday, 5-10 pm.
We have worked hard not to impact Lauro while growing Vindalho. Our excellent staff keeps Lauro Kitchen humming along. The key change you'll notice at Lauro is that Laila has been promoted and now is managing the front of the house. Daren and I are down the street at Vindalho ready to seat you and deliver a wonderful meal to your table.
Don't Stop the Presses!
Recent months have showered great press on Lauro Kitchen. Organic Style featured Lauro in its October issue of Twenty Best Restaurants.
Portland Monthly's Best Restaurants 2005 issue includes our Mediterranean Mussels and Chouriço in Cataplana as the cover shot. We were voted Best Mediterranean, Chef's Choice and Reader's Choice. Thank you to our colleagues and guests alike.
The Sunday, November 6th issue of the New York Times recommended both Lauro Kitchen and Vindalho in their travel feature of Portland. I appreciate that they noted our warm, inviting environs and our role as a neighborhood restaurant on Portland's rising eastside.
Proud to Participate
Lauro Kitchen works hard to be involved in issues of hunger prevention, sustainable agriculture and education. We were proud to participate in the Third Annual Oregon Harvest Dinner raising money for The Oregon Food Bank. The event, held October 22nd, included Art of Catering, Basilico, Lauro Kitchen, Pix Patisserie and Southpark. More than $350,000 was raised to fight hunger in Oregon. Every dollar raised by The Oregon Food Bank purchases $7.00 of food for the people it serves.
Lauro Kitchen is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday and Monday 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Complimentary parking is available in our private lot on the west side of the building. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. Please try to arrive early to insure a table for you and your party.
