Coupon Celebrates Summer of Lunch
2008 marks the forty-first anniversary of the Summer of Love. Some of us still have vivid memories of that time in our lives and in our nation’s history. The politics, the music and the hair were just a part of the story. But these days many of us summertime pilgrims are feeling weary from spiking gas prices, economic malaise, the long primary season and what seemed like an endless cold and wet spring.
Finally, Oregon’s signature warm days and cool nights have arrived; there will be a new administration in 2009 and we are happy to treat you to 20% off a delicious midday meal. See … it’s getting better all the time.
At Lauro Kitchen, we have decided to make 2008 our Summer of Lunch. Join us Tuesday through Saturday, 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. We happily accept reservations for lunch and dinner. Free parking is available in our private lot.
To commemorate the start of lunch service and Lauro’s fifth anniversary, friend and neighbor Frank DiMarco took this photo of Julie and me. We met 28 years ago in the Haight-Ashbury section of San Francisco at a friend’s apartment on Stanyan Street. We fondly call that era the Machado summer of love.

Sit back and let the evening go. Seasonal favorites and new dishes fill the dinner menu. Highlights include Summer Melon Salad with Grilled Onions, Feta, Olives and Pine Nuts, “Fattoush”, Lebanese Bread Salad with Lemon Sumac Vinaigrette and Feta, Portuguese-Style Roasted Pork Loin with Spicy Dried Plum Sauce, Fried Potatoes and Kale, and Mario’s House-Made Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli with Fire-Roasted Tomato Sauce.
Want to turn on or tune in? The Electric Blueberry may be just what the good doctor ordered. This one is deep purple (of course) and will gladly take you on a trip. Vodka, grapefruit, lemon and blueberry syrup co-mingle to create a delicious cocktail that balances sweet and tart. Aperol Cocktail is currently a summer smash hit in New York City. Aperol Liqueur is a product of Italy and claims to be “the nation’s favorite aperitif.” Add Carpano, Prosecco and a slice of fresh orange to this beverage for a truly refreshing experience. If you’re ready to hit the beach, Bar Goddess Gloria Preston recommends the Sauvie Island Sunburn to get your Glo on. Lauro’s Northwest take on the Margarita includes Tequila, mint, lemon, lime and muddled fresh berries. Have one of these divine options and raise your consciousness.
